As I have mentioned in posts before, television is a very deceptive
medium. Copperfield, Blaine and Brown could fake 100% of their acts
and we would be none the wiser. Equally they could perform their
acts as a real audience sees it. These magicians have the skills to
perform without the aid of television trickery. This includes the
technical skills of sleight –of-hand, a good knowledge of psychology,
a knowledge of magical principals and mechanics. When a magician
performs he/she must have stage presence (even on TV.) They must be
able to talk and entertain and appear relaxed (whilst the other side
of their brain executes the sleight of hand or mental calculation or
whatever to facilitate the `magic'.) The magician must be able to
keep control of the audience, lead them, manipulate them, condition
them and anticipate their thoughts, their actions and reactions. All
this possibly even for just one trick. Copperfield, Blaine and Brown
have the above skills, but working with the medium that is television
can allow them to enhance their apparent skills even more. What they
do is entertain and if they can use this deceptive medium to
entertain the public even more then of course they are going
to `cheat' occasionally. Actors and actresses have exploited the
screen for their own enhancement since the invention of the movie
camera, so why not magicians?

And yes Copperfield and Blaine do claim to walk through walls and be
able to sit in blocks of ice for weeks. They are Magicians. Look at
the hype Blaine put out before he was entombed in ice. And then
placed on public view for days, like an exhibition. Did he ever
say "I am going to perform the TRICK where I will APPARENTLY remain
in a block of ice for a week"? NO!
