I see what you're getting at, but doesn't the machine first not read out
correctly, and then (apparently) read out correctly? Derren doesn't touch the
ticket inbetween as far as I can recall. If she first stated that the ticket
was incorrect and then scanned it then yeah...I'm not positive but I'm not sure
that this what what happened.
It is an amusing theory. I don't have a theory about how this
actually worked; I know precisely how it worked. No linguistic
tricks, no conditioning of responses. Rather than spelling it out
for you, think about this. The machines in the dog track will not
pay out on a losing ticket. The operator scans the ticket and if it
is a winner, they are told how much to pay out. If the ticket is a
loser the machine will say so. Even if the operator was convinced
that the ticket was a winning one, the machine would still say it
was a loser. Period. Do you think that linguistic tricks or whatever
work on machines?
