I remember highrollerentertainmentcasting
previously posting the fact that Derren mentioned his nod in
"Pure Effect", but wasn't going to give away why he did
it. I am also one of the lucky ones who has got his
hands on Pure Effect, and I have just recently read
that interesting bit. I used to be a magician and
therefore understand how we shouldn't divulge secrets, but
this isn't really a magic trick. ("Smoke" is one of
Derren's magic tricks, and if you think I am giving that
away, you MUST be deluded!)
The fact that Derren
mentioned his nod in Pure Effect means that it is there for
a reason. I doubt he will mind me saying why he
uses it – as it isn't really the be-all and end-all of
his talents.
As Derren confesses himself,
(especially on the radio 1 interview) that he looks at how
people react to signals that he gives out. In short,
Derren uses nodding to try and see what the person is
thinking. For example, they may be thinking of a
card/object. If derren goes ... "I can see it is big? Yes?" –
then nods. If the person gives a positive response
i.e. nods/agrees then he has narrowed down the
possibilities of what that card/object can be. If the person
doesn't respond, however, then he knows that the object
isn't big.
He even does this on radio one when
he says to Olga "I can see it is big..?" and she
doesn't respond. He then goes on to say ... "about the
size of your hand". Sneaky, as who could tell 'how
big' he thought the object was in the first
place.
Anyway, that is the mystery of Derrens Nod solved: he
uses it to initiate a response in someone (the
equivalent when you say to someone "know what I
mean?").
Lauren: "I reckon it could just be used to encourage
people to relax and open up" – you don't know how right
you are!

p.s. I agree –
what is the point in having a Derren chat board if you
are not going to divulge / speculate how he does what
he does?!! :)
