With absolutely no disrespect to Ormond McGill - who is a grandaddy
of hypnosis - who I am sure could hypnotise you without even saying a
word, his book is perhaps not the best reference for thinking about
Rapid or Instant inductions.

If you see a hypnotic induction as a repetition of sleep, sleep,
sleep or relax relax relax you are more aligned to the stage
hypnotists of yesteryear. I dont think you will find many modern
stage hypnotists or therapists using that style - even if they use a
progressive rather than rapid induction.

There are many ways of rapidly inducing hypnosis and you are right
that they require a confidence in what you are doing. My
understanding of how they work, and there are likely other theories
are that they start with the arrest of someone's attention/an
interruption of their regular conscious wakeful awareness. There are
many ways to do this -

Say something ambiguous
Interrupt a handshake and show them their hand
Slap them on the head

This creates a search for meaning in that action or statement -
probably only lasts about 1 or 2 seconds - sometimes called a
transderivational search. In those two seconds you can hit them with
a suggestion - and it might be sleep - or it might be something
ambiguous that keeps in that searching state while you deliver more
suggestions, where they are looking inward for some meaning. I like
to call it an isalnd in a sea of confusion. The suggestion that they
will drop into a trance is something solid they can hang onto just as
much as thinking 'this blokes clearly mad'. If they already have some
expectation that you are going to hypnotise them then the suggestion
that they go into a trance will readily be accepted.

Hope this makes some sense. If you want a clearer explanation and an
example let me know. I recommend you read Training Trances as it
outlines in detail a number of rapid inductions with a clear
explanation of why they work.
