somebody (e.g. to pick a number/symbol etc) or trick somebody in the
way Derren does?"

Yes - Guessing which hand the coin is in. It works every time, as
long as you don't forget the patter! It's not just a case of looking
at their eyes! Derren has perfected the patter to direct them to put
the coin in a particular hand - instead of guessing which hand the
coin is in, you cause them to put it in the particular hand. You can
then look at their eyes for confirmation. It's actually best to be
looking at their eyes the whole time, especially when they are
deciding which hand (based on your patter).

Influencing is much better if you put them into a confused,
suggestible state, as Derren does at Walthamstow, by interuppting
their normal patterns, indulging in the unexpected.

Authority is very important, but this is more confidance that it will
work.

>>"Derren is sexy. I don't know why."
His immaculately purple dress sense, and charm, naturally. He works
so hard at perfecting and projecting a persona, so it's no wonder
he's
everyone's idol!

>>"Look on his website (channel4 thingy) and examine the 3 of
diamonds video."

This is explained more fully in Pure Effect (
http://www.awin1.com/tclick.php?
id=14271&mid=134&p=http://www.magictricks.co.uk/prodshow.asp?
code=216 ) along with the Jack of Spades. Do it fast, don't pay much
attention to it, otherwise people may realise what you're trying to
do. If it works, it works, but always have a way out. I simply use
the classic force if I need to.

If you really want to do this sort of magic, do some research into
hypnosis, NLP and Cold Reading - there are plenty of books out there
that aren't aimed at magicians, and these are the best ones. Don't
use conventional magician's books, because everyone else is - I
bought Pure Effect for "Plerophoria"!
