Possibly best to keep these conversations public. That gives everyone a
chance to read and reply.
Clearly, unless you are one of these people you can't know.
So build a model for it.
Martial arts: physical supremity
Grand Master: somone much much better than you
Expensive club (i mean, just LOOK at it - it's like no dojo that I've ever
been in): these people are dedicated and serious about it all
All ready to conform: Look at the wide variety of outfits they are not
wearing. These people are paying to conform in a united way, to the end of
obeying the orders from the guy who dresses differently. Who is the most
uniquely dressed guy in the room?
There are a dozen other reasons why this guy hits the deck so violently,
and they are all there to be seen. Derren does not hide this kind of
information. In fact he quite blatantly states that every single aspect of
every performance is carefully pre-calculated. Eg. "That gothic feel we
like to go for"
The only piece of information which you may lack is that "chi" (pronunced
ch'ee or k'ee) the 'life force' or 'life energy' is well known and
practiced by these people. I used to have a friend of mine who could
tickle my feet from the other side of a room (without my former
knowledge). Take it as you find it, but if you want to know what The
Students thought, you have to take it as THEY find it.
Did you take the time to watch it without sound and then listen to it
without picture? And on this occasion I would do it in THAT order. Did
you watch peoples eyes as intently are Derren claims to do? If you really
want to screw with your head, put some loud and unrelated music (no lyrics
please) and WATCH THE SCREEN AND IGNORE THE MUSIC, and while you watch you
will find that you become more and more aware of the people in the room and
the subtle movements they are making; each time you watch it you will
instinctively focus in on a different aspect of the performance so that it
remains interesting; you will notice the decor and uniforms; you will watch
the spectators during the candle demonstration; you will notice the posture
of the subject; you will notice the expression of horror on the Grand
Masters face; you will notice how Derren uses his feet and hips to
influence the subject; and eventually you will even become aware of a full
camera crew taping you to be seen by millions...
Ask yourself, why did Derren take mid teenage girls into an only-recently
disused local mental asylum and suggest that they would see weird
things. Why not take a bunch of fifty year old financial directors and a
sit them in a park near the pond on a sunny Friday afternoon? Wouldn't the
effect be identical? Or maybe he could do it with a few of his pissed
mates in the pub one Saturday evening?
Reality is what your five(/six) senses tell you it is. As long you only
'look at life through your eyes' (excuse the cliché metaphor) you will only
see the world from one point of reality. To understand what Derren is
doing, you need to start looking at how other people see the world - what
philosophies or beliefs do they have that you don't (or vice versa). NLP
will help you to learn how to do this. But "the map is not the territory",
knowing how to do it and being able to do it are two very different
things. I'm sure you know how chess pieces move, but that alone does not
mean you can play chess to a competent degree.
Any wiser?
So long,
Bc
