Subject: neurons

Yea Lauren, we all want to know!!!! ... tell
us!!

Also, just so that I am contributing to the posts –
just HOW MANY posts did we have today?!

Ok, I
admit, Derren Brown is my idol – I have all his
publications. For those interested, I have finished "pure
effect" a while back – very good book, interesting with
long articulate words (well, for a computer scientist
like me anyway!). Along with all the other NLP and
hypnosis books I am reading, I am also currently on
"absolute magic", then I will watch "the devils picture
book" when finished – saving the best till last! (to
all mentalist-related interested people out there,
all products from derren only talk about magic ONLY.
sorry).

Reading these may give you more info on
magic tricks, but it also gives you a major insight
into Derren himself:

Through reading his books,
I have realised that Derren likes to "explain how
he does things" as it gives the audience something
small to grasp on how he does the amazing things he
does. Some explanations are true, some aren't. Derren
thinks that there is something great about "taking a
risk" once in a while – if it doesn't pay off, then no
worry, but if it does, it creates a sense of "wonder" in
his routines.

Example of untrue statement:
(MC3 I think) 3 guys at pier, guess which hand the
coin is in. At the end of this routine, he says the
guy has been holding the coin for a long time now,
and all the neurons on his hand have allowed him to
work out subconsciously which side the coin is up.
After reading Derren's work, this is an untrue
statement that Derren would happily risk saying. He would
have a ½ chance of getting it right, and if wrong, guy
holding the coin would look bad, rather than Derren. The
best part yet, is that Derren says this at the end of
the routine – so even if the guy gets it wrong, the
production team can still edit it out!
Please trust me
on this – its all true! If you don't believe me,
read Pure Effect!

To all you psychology
students out there – grr! I am jealous – although I will
catch up with you eventually!

Hope that post
gained your interest – if only for a
moment!

really annoying, so I have decided to move!)
