I wouldn't accuse Derren of ever using stooges,
but he definitely scrutinises his subjects, probably
picking the best-suited to the effect he's going to
do.
If someone were to pick them for him, I'd guess that
the trick would be somewhat harder to carry out,
though not impossible.
On the Radio 1 interview, he
may well have preselected the tricks to match the
people he was with & the setting.

I don't know
for sure or anything that it applies exactly to his
act, but if you're going to steal a watch, a leather
strap's easier than a metal clasp, so that's what you go
for.
Not exactly cheating... just selecting the elements
for the best results.
