Subject: [Derren Brown] Re: You're all very attractive...

JD - the effect being discussed is Reminisce, in all it guises. My
comment was meant as a sarcastic remark in response to Bobby's
whine. The fortuitous appearance of Dale and his lucid observation
started a chain of thoughts cascading through my brain. I present my
thoughts in the agreed upon Collins Junior Dictionary standard.

The vast majority of DBs effects are based upon the premise of
duality. What the participant experiences and what the audience sees
are two very different things. On top of that, what Derren leads the
participant to think is occuring also differs from what he is making
the audience think he is doing.

The best example I can think of is the performance of Reminisce with
the German assistant (I can't remember the name of the video). For
those of you that have it, listen to what Derren says.
Frame it in the "I'm the blindfolded assistant plucked from the
audience" mentality and then listen again with a "I'm in the
audience watching coconut boy read someones mind". You will be
surprised at how different the two mental pictures you arrive at
are.
His language and structure is vague enough to be interpreted in two
different ways but specific enough to leave no doubt. It's like a
hitherto unused application of Cold Reading.

Once you start thinking about his most puzzling effects with this
mentality (Ganetauk, something you could use for the Derren Brown
model you were working on?) it really makes you think, as well as
smile :)

Think about the "When I say now you will not be able to pick the
girl up" effect with the boxers. During MC night DB offered
commentary on some of his effects. His statements regarding this
particular effect were "I'm sure you picked up on the double meaning
of the word wait" - suggesting that he had weakend the boxers with
his language. The truth is that it has nothing to do with him or his
antics but more to do with his assistant. (Check out the Georgia
Magnet effect for all those that are interested, it has been covered
extensively in this group)

I could type and type until my fingers became bloody stumps about
what this method of thinking has revealed in my analysis of DBs
effects, but this post is already quite long...

Dale, thank you for the reply that sparked my cognitive flame and
Bobby - thanks for the post that started the discussion. JD -
"Whilst, as you know, I'm not keen on talking about methods" is the
understatement of the year ;) Please don't insert books into my
various orficies for this post that may stray too close to the truth

It appears, any explanation that Derren offers is a huge fat lie
designed to cause convoluted discussion in groups like this one. The
truth lies in a marriage betwixt the appearance of the effect and
the interpretation of the effect. Somewhere, in this murky grey area
sits Derren Brown laughing manically devising more effects...
