Oh my goodness, I just wet myself with laughter. Derren really has
got Steve hook, line and sinker.

Yes, DB COULD use this stuff - but I really think he didn't on the
awful "Born Sloppy".

Think about this. Derren is sat with Jodie Kidd in the green room.

"Oh hello Jodie, nice to meet you - I'm Derren. I've been asked to
do some mindreading with you later but the producer told me that we
won't have much time. I was going to get you to think of a memory
from your childhood that you can really focus on. I tell you what,
rather than doing this later why don't you think back to something
that stands out from your youth now. Just so you can really really
focus, do you want to write it down here? [DB whips out handy pad
and pen] That way you won't forget. I promise I won't look... in
fact, I'll leave the room while you do it and once you've really
focussed on the memory you can hide the paper in your purse or
something so that there's no way I can ever see it and nobody can
accuse us of setting something up".

KER-CHING. Money in the bank for DB.

Fast forward a few hours to recording. Our balding hero turns to the
waif-like one.

"Ok, let's try this... as long as people are happy we haven't set
anything up...."

Well, she's not going to say "Well, Derren - we haven't set anything
up but you did get me to write something down a little earlier."
She's going to keep quiet because in her tiny model's mind there is
no way that any funny stuff has taken place and certainly no set up
has occurred.

Do you see? Now the overall trick is "someone writes something down
and Derren works out what it is" rather than "someone thinks of
something and Derren works out what is is". A subtle difference at
first glance but one that means a huge change in the impact of
what's going on.

Now, I am not suggesting that the above happened. Something similar
may have happened or I could be way off the mark and Mr NLP could be
spot on. It's just that DB is a crafty rascal and my brother in law
who caught his live show in Bristol said that there was much buzz in
the bar at half time about some of the mischief that was going on
and how what they were seeing in the audience wasn't the same as
what the on-stage participants were seeing. Perhaps I shall be party
to some of this when I catch the tour. Perhaps not. Either way, I
repeat my opinion that the man is a rascal. A charming rascal, but a
rascal never the less.
