Yes, I think we are certainly in agreement on this fundamental :P

The debate we had was whether to PRETEND or actually DO IT, although each
has it (dis)advantages, there is little doubt as to the upshot - people
will follow.

The main difference between PaceAndLead and HSI is that PAL (isn't that a
friendly TLA) creates a pattern gradually and then gently leads the person
into state <x>; whereas HSI (ab)uses the existence of a known-pre-existing
pattern (the complex sequence of actions known to us simply as "a hand
shake") and jumps straight in for the prompt move to state <x>

One is quick and effective... when well-executed. Potentially offensive if
poorly-executed or <this> person is immune to the method.
The other is (comparatively) slow but equally as effective. But it has the
advantage of being relatively fool-proof. You can practice and learn it
without risking offending people. And when it doesn't work - it is less
likely* that the person will end up offended.

* No matter what - you will offend someone at some point in your life -
even with all the best intentions in the world. hee-hee-> Ever bought your
girlfriend the WRONG present??

Yes, this idea is common to both HSI and PAL.
HSI is the teleporter to success - just make sure you don't teleport into a
wall! lol
PAL is a car, the journey is longer and you may run into some traffic jams
en route. But if you persevere you will get there; and if you see a brick
wall coming, TURN LEFT! {that's their left, of course, but don't let that
influence you} and drive around it.

Each have their applications, choose wisely.
