I think it was a mixture of tactile (grabbing the student's hand;
gently caressing above the tendons, etc.) and verbal (describing the
sensation -- or lack of -- of anaesthesia as a "blueness")
suggestion.

Also, as with most of Derren's tricks, the context is extremely
important (here it was the amputation theatre, so we're told); this
would play on the victims' subconscious to the extent that any
suggestion related to the field of medicine/surgery would be
heightened. Hence the "numb" hand.
