Chris, as a hypnotist/hypnotherapist, you should be able to spot
that this trick, just like the trick with the medical students in
MC3, is purely down to the power of suggestion. Look carefully...the
lights don't move, and thus neither do the shadows. Derren has simply
latched on to the heightened sensitivity of his no doubt carefully
selected (for their suggestibility/responsiveness) subjects, which is
much amplified by the spooky surroundings used for both tricks,
especially the one in MC2. In fact, I'd go as far to say that the
trick in MC2 goes a little beyond the realms of suggestion and into
the area of rapid induction, especially with the million-miles-a-
minute speed of speech that Derren uses (with heightened tonality too
I noticed). The fork trick is more a combination of vision distortion
(which I'm sure you're familiar with for induction purposes) as well
as suggestion.

Think about it...being led through a darkened mental institution by
torchlight is bound to put you in a highly receptive/suggestive
state, and we don't get to hear everything Derren says to them due to
the overlap/echo, but the basic gist of what he is conveying is
obvious...being unable to distinguish between VOICES IN YOUR HEAD (or
images) and REALITY.

Hope this 'sheds some light' on it ;)

Best,

Daniel
