"Hypnosis can't be used to make someone do what
he or she don't want to in the first
place"

An interesting comment, I am not sure if it is true.
If you read the work of Stanley Milgram he was able
to get people to do something they didn't want to do
without hypnosis. For non-pyschologists he had members of
the public partake in a scientific experiment in
which they were asked by a someone wearing white coats
to pass ever increasing levels electricity through a
"victim". He presumed most would refuse once the victim
begged them to stop, however few did. This experiment
has been repeated over and over again.

NLP is
mostly non-sense, but then so is a lot of psychology.
Psychologists do not have perfect relationships or much control
over other people either.

Ormand McGill's book
is actually a very good book on stage hypnosis. He
also has a world wide reputation. Books aren't
necessarily the best way to learn, but they are cheap. The
best is a seminar, then videos/tapes and finally
books. However a decent seminar is probably going to
cost a bit(unless you are to be taught by someone who
learnt from a book).

I agree hypnosis is not
magic and not a quick fix. I think some people might
have a much wider definition of the sleeplike state
that is commonly induced by psychiatrist and this is
your confusion.
