I saw this done in the movie The Grifters some
time ago. Never had the cajones to try it myself due
to John Cusack getting his clock cleaned by the
bartender who caught him out.
But that's just a 'worst
case scenario' (unless you come drinking in my home
town, in which case it's quite normal
behaviour).
You could always say it turned out you'd a £10 with
you all along, and thought you were helping the
barkeep by giving them a smaller note.
