Subject: An Apology
I'm sending this message by way of an apology.
On the 12th June 2003 I made an offer in the "Derren-Brown" group to
make my web server space available.
I accept that by encouraging access to a folder with copyright
materials as well as non-copyright materials I was by implication
encouraging people to break the law. I was trying to fool myself
that people would look at the copyright materials on a try-before-
you-buy basis.
The analogy I made between my storage area and a conventional
library is somewhat skewed for this simple reason:
When you download from a host server you are creating a new copy on
the client PC.
So the post I made (see below) was foolish for several reasons:
1) It was a public suggestion that could rightfully be described as
an incitement to break the law by implication.
2) It left me open to question on my ethics.
3) It makes any criticism that I have made of other people's
behaviour absolutely hypocritical.
So, in conclusion, I'm sorry because I have upset a few people and
also I was in the wrong. This is likely to be a contributing reason
for my mental state being dodgy in the last week.
So, I will still be making part of 1GB my server available for
Derren Brown / Mentalism stuff including an ftp area, but I'm not
going to keep copyright materials there because that would be rather
foolish.
