Subject: Re: [Derren Brown] Exposure of magic secrets?

Maybe we should preface anything like this with a 'spoiler' disclaimer, so as
not to spoil the fun for the people who simply wish to enjoy the effects. Which
is fair enough, really. Either that or set up another group to discuss how the
tricks are done. There is a slight difference between explaining the magical
principles behind the effects and using an NLP theory - using the NLP theory
adds to the Mind Control package and enhances it; after all, that's the
explanation that Derren alludes to. Explaining how its actually done takes away
from the image. Now I realise that we don't have responsibility on this group
to maintain Derrens image, but it does feel slightly 'bah humbug' to spoil the
fun. Although in a lot of instances it doesn't matter what you say, people
believe what they want. I had a discussion a while back about 'photoreading'
and book tests, and I'm sure no-one believed me that you didn't need to
photoread anything to do the effect.

for people to discuss what Derren does, how he does
it and what he looks like while he does it. Most people write
nonsense about how they think he is accomplishing his feats but when
someone writes something that is accurate, the magicians start
worrying.

Here's a much overlooked fact: Most of what Derren does is magic.
Trickery. You know that clipboard he uses on stage? It's as dodgy as
f***. You know the way he can write down a letter and have someone
work out what it is? It uses a standard magicians/mentalists prop.
You know the way he can tell someone the name of their childhood
friend by "throat reading"? Guess what, he knows the name of the
friend before he starts the presentation.

Are we meant to only discuss what Derren does if we have outlandish
and very, very wrong theories? Is it only exposure if we are correct?
