Subject: Re: [Derren Brown] Does this clear anything up?
I'm not so sure this is true - although his effects are presented as
psychological effects, this doesnt mean there is no 'trickery' involved.
Besides, mentalist is a word for a specific branch of magic.
As far as discussion of exposure is concerned - I've been a very amateur
magician for about 20 years now, and I think theres a differentiation to be
made between hypothesizing about how Derren achieves his effects, whether by
NLP means or 'trickery'; and the direct exposure of magic effects. For example,
there's been a lot of talk in the past regarding whether the 'touching
strippers' effect is Banacheks psychokinetic touch or not. I think discussion
about how he could have done the effect is valid, but direct exposure of
Banacheks effect isn't; Banacheks is a commercially available effect. Thin line
I know.
