Subject: Newbie - hope you can help
Hi there.
I have just joined the group after seeing Derren's show in Swindon
which I thought was astounding. I have an amateur interest in magic
but am enjoying just being a fan - I'm 50 so it's nice to be really
amazed by magic again. If you can call it 'Magic'.
I have a question regarding this group. As far as I can see it's a
public site, created originally by a few fans to celebrate someone
they think is worthy of such attention. Clearly it's attracted a lot
of magicians who are used to talking about methods on magic
discussion boards (which I don't feel I'm knowledgeable enough to
participate in). I'm confused reading these posts as to what level
of discussion is appropriate. .
I'm fairly new to the internet and these groups, so please forgive
my ignorance. I might just be very old-fashioned and of course I
realise there are a lot of people with a genuine interest in how
Derren achieves his work. I also realise it's becoming very easy for
people with only a little interest in magic to look at webpages and
find out a lot more about magic techniques than was possible some
years back. A group like this presents a conundrum, and I don't wish
to seem ungracious to the answer-seeking non-magicians. But can
someone - perhaps some magicians - please let me know what the
appropriate behaviour should be for me posting here as an amateur? I
don't feel right speculating on and exposing magical methods,
especially anything that would detract from a non-magician's
appreciation of him in a public site, but equally don't want to seem
prudish. And as I'm a fan of his, the magician in me wants him to
get the reputation he deserves, and it seems that a site like this
should, as I'm sure it does wonderfully, facilitate that.
It is nice, though, to have magicians and hypnotists and all sorts
of people in different areas of expertise all with their thoughts on
how Derren might achieve his effects. My best wishes to the group,
and long may it last. I hope I'm not too past it to contribute
something occasionally.
Thank you,
Mark Fischer
