Subject: Deren Brown=Sherlock Holmes?
Right – I realise that the title of this post suggests the ravings of
a mad idiot, or else the blasphemous repetition of a previous post,
but indulge me for a moment.
With all the talk of Sherlock Holmes flitting about the group lately,
I was inspired to read the tales again – starting with "A Study In
Scarlet"
Now I remember very little of the tale in question – but again, just
bear with me here.
May I refer to Mind Control 3, I believe, and also the latest episode
of the series. Anyway – it was when Derren was "Guessing" what people
do for a living. Not only does he quote "Scarlet":
"By a man's finger-nails, by his coat-sleeve, by his boots, by his
trouser-knees, by the callosities of his forefinger and thumb, by his
expression, by his shirt-cuffs–by each of these things a man's
calling is plainly revealed."
but, surprisingly and unexpectedly – "Scarlet" `quotes' him!
"`...I should like to see him clapped down in a third-class carriage on
the Underground, and asked to give the trades of all his fellow-
travellers. I would lay a thousand to one against him.'"
Now we already know by Derren's quote from Doyle's works that he is
familiar with Sherlock Holmes. Can we also deduce (no pun intended)
that some of the references worked as inspiration? Or could it just
be coincidence?
Let it be known that I am planning to re-read as many of the Sherlock
tales as my sanity will allow – and if I find any
more "Coincidences" – I'll send word!
