I am 99% self taught (vaguely remember a "few" lessons when I was about 5).
I learned Piano exactly as Terry suggest - mathematical patterns; 2212221;
135; 13b5; 1357b etc. And then just play on instinct after that. The only
instrument I can play from score is the Sax, but to be honest, it's been
about 17 years since I last picked one up with any sincerity, so it would
likely take me a month or so to get back up to speed.
When you *start* with piano, you will find things much easier if you stick
with C Major and A Minor, as this gives you far less interaction with the
black notes. Once you have a feel for how it all hangs together, then
learn the living crap out of your scales and just play in whatever key
seems appropriate.

Spoooky - I am *completely* familiar with the journey you just took me
on. Is this just me and KB, or does everyone have this journey when
listening to Beethovens Moonlight?
KB, May I recommend you track down something by Andreas Vollenwieder - I
suggest "Caverna Magica (in the garden, under the tree)" or "Book of Roses"
as a starter - it's classical in composition (you will need to check out a
whole album to get a proper feel for it) but not produced 300 years
ago. If our tastes are really that similar, i think you might enjoy it
....or maybe not? (arrrghhh I'm turning into Terry)
