FOR GOD'S SAKE!!!!

Are you SERIOUSLY suggesting that a garbled mispronounciation
of "Think of someone else" would inspire any person to come up with
the name "Orson Wells???"

Let's look at the ENTIRE event for a moment:

Derren has gathered together a group of YOUNG ARTISTS and begins his
act by making a brief announcement about what an honour it is to be
among a this select group "at the forefront of creativity".

Next he selects his volunteer using a scrunched up sheet of paper
thrown over his shoulder into the crown. This is to be picked up and
thrown "three times". The heavy implication of this is that "THE
THIRD MAN" is to be the volunteer.

Derren ushers Steve, the THIRD MAN, into position and explains how
obsessively secretive he has been. "Not even the FILM CREW know what
this picture is".

Steve is asked to think of ANY celebrity. Personally, if I were
asked to think of any celebrity with no preparation, I would plump
for a pop star.

But planted in Steve's mind are at LEAST three seeds:

1) Young creative genius

2) The Third Man

3) Film crew

(Tellingly, when Steve gives his astonished reaction at the end of
the event, he says he originally thought of Woody Allen, one of the
few other ground-breaking actor/directors who made a name for himself
at a young age.)

Steve also has in mind the awareness that because he is about to see
a portrait, this mystery celebrity must have a strong, recognisable
image. Also, the fact that this portrait is concealed with heavy red
fabric gives the impression that this is a person of some gravitas,
deserving of respect.

Darren intersperses his very short sentenses with a
garbled "Alright?" which he pronounces "OR..?". He does this
countless times with pleading eyes, until he feels confident that
Steve has lazily aped these first two letters.

After all, how many other celebrities have names that start with OR?

I am sure there are mountains of other minor suggestions that steered
Steve's thinking, so PLEASE stop trying to tell everyone that the
trick hinges on the words "Someone else"!!!!!
