Mike. Interesting explanation, however, my belief is:
I have read in 13 Steps that a mentalist (probably Coridna himself I
believe) went into a room and sat there blindfolded. He would predict
which object someone was to draw on a blackboard. Equipped with a
receiver in his trousers, he would receive codes as to which object
was being drawn (sent by an accomplice watching the whole thing).
However, at the last minute, the receiver stopped working, and he was
left with only his "natural skills" to help him. Instead of trying to
call it off, he decided to sit there and hope he got lucky. It turned
out that he could work out which objects (square, circle etc) were
being drawn, by the sound of the chalk movements.
The point of this wonderful story (other than to entertain those that
just read this group and don't post ... you know who you are!) is
that I really believe Derren did the same thing with the crash mat.
Watch the video again... you'll see Chris and the crew moving the mat
with Derren in the room. Think about it. If you were there with your
back turned, blindfolded, but could hear everything in the room, I
think you'd be able to hear whether they moved a huge mat to your
left, or right, or directly behind you ....

No doubt there will be others doubting what I believe he did, but I'm
more than confident that that's what he did, besides, that's very
much Derren's style... oh, and the fact that he is already facing
backwards when he asks for the "yes, yes, ....."

p.s. Derren is such a great person at anchoring... the "model" he was
chatting to, he almost holds onto her when he gives her the "line".
Also, anyone else notice the anchoring going on with Derren wiping
under his nose when he won in the casino???
