Look for a fixed pattern (or create one) and break it.

DB uses a lovely "put the coin that's left in your right hand, sorry, my
right hand, and when the left hand is all right it'll be left in the right
way to leave it there now" <not a quote at all>. Another member here
(search archive) had a nice one about how gravity works, but it didn't fit
my pattern, so I don't remember it :(

Play with time - it works well for me. "When you sat down to read this did
you think that you would look back later and see how you are learning new
techniques or did you look forward to the time when you would be looking
back to when you might try this later?" etc. don't get too carried away,
look for that moment when your friend looks agitated by your nonsense. And
just before he gets there... anchor the state by stuffing your middle
finger up your nose and laugh heartily. [darn, there I go again, trying to
be funny - perhaps you could use a less humourous anchor]
