If your chat program is runnning OK you can stop reading right now ...

Anyone else have a "Unable to load Applet. May need to update version
of Microsoft VM." error?

There is a step by step guide to get applets (esp YahooChat) working
here ....

http://www.freddys-utilities.co.uk/javaproblems.php

" ....
Problem 2
Two possible issues here, firstly you have no Java Virtual Machine,
or secondly you have Sun Java Virtual Machine running.

To disable sun java (try this, even if you don't think you have sun) -
it doesn't work with Yahoo! Chat
Tools>>Internet Options, select the "advanced" tab. Scroll down the
list until you see "Java (Sun)". Remove the check from "Use Java
2 .... for <applet>".
Scroll down a little more until you see "Microsoft VM". Make sure
that "JIT compiler for virtual machine enabled" is enabled. Click
apply. Restart Internet Explorer. Try the applet again, it works,
great!! If not, click here.

...."

I did this and hey presto the applet loads fine.

I would advise that you reset the Java Sun option after the chat. I
think the MS VM is very old and doesn't comply to the latest
standards. Also MS VM will not be shipped with windows anymore
instead Sun's JRE will be included. (Unless of course the evil MS win
an appeal).
