Derren Brown

Mind-reader, psychological magician, and all round spooklord,
Derren scared the shit out of us at Born Sloppy this week. People ran
screaming from the room as he read Sara's mind and extracted a
childhood memory from Jodie Kidd's brain.

He's got a new series on Channel4 at the end of Feb and a couple of
live shows where he'll be "playing real Russian Roulette with members
of the public". Don't sit near the front.

We spoke to Derren backstage - without touching him, shaking his
hand, or maintaining any kind of eye contact - and posed these:

What music you like? Bach

The first record you ever bought? "The Chicken Song" - Spitting Image

What's your tipple? Single malt whiskey

What did you dream of doing as a kid? Painter [you can see his
paintings here – most impressive)

Were you a teenage rebel? Not in the slightest

Ever been arrested? No. I did have a real shoplifting thing though

What sort of thing did you nick? 80's nick-nacky gadgets things.

Like Rubik's cubes? Yeah and those pin things you pushed your face
into You never got caught? I nearly got caught once in Harrods.
That's when I stopped

Ever been in a fight? Got a little bit punched wearing a posh school
uniform in a rough part of town

How did you get into `magic' and mind-reading? I was always an
imaginative kid. Bit of loner. I saw a hypnotist at University and
that was it

Which magician do you rate? Chan Canasta

Tell us one amazing fact. There are over 14 million different types
of shoes
