Something very similar to what I am about to say here has already
been said by somebody else in another thread. (I'll give you five
minutes to re-read that sentence - i know it didn't quite come out
right - And I call myself a writer *snork*)
Anyway - whatever Derren may now be - psychological illusionist,
mentalist (dont say it - it sounds bad! :P) whatever, he WAS a
magician, and in my eyes he still is a magician in his manner, his
performance, and in part of his method.
A magician's job is to deceive - and you KNOW you're being deceived
simply by hearing the term "illusion". An illusion is NOT real - its
been manufactured and tweaked and styled to make it LOOK real.
So, taking into account that Derren spent so many years as a card
magician, lying, deceiving and the like, why should he change that?
That's what entertains people after all; looking beyond the illusion.
That in fact is what we are doing on this very board - entertaining
ourselves by trying to figure out just 'how he did that'. (Or driving
ourselves - and each other - to the point of insanity! But that's not
a big worry for me as I reached that point long ago)
I'm going to go a bit deeper here seeing as the expose and this
thread and so on has brought the subject up (to my most humble
delightment)
Even if Derren's techniques DO include NLP and hypnosis and
psychology and what-not, there is no doubt that (as Blue chip so
eloquently put it) he does use tricks, and therefore, it is
completely sensible to assume that he does use stooges/actors.
So yes, I believe he does lie - but he's a very good liar - and
that's what I love about him :D
