Pattern Interrupts

From time to time it is necessary to take direct control of a
volatile noisy situation. The pattern interrupt works like a charm
even when tempers are hot and people are yelling at the top of their
lungs because we are all trained to shut up and listen when we hear
one. The most common interrupt is shouting the person's name out
loud. We all tend to stop talking and listen when we hear our own
name shouted out loud.

Less common, but equally effective is the phrase,

"Wait a second, I think I hear something."

I have seen a whole room silenced in a split second with that one. I
have seen a book dropped off a table and clatter to the floor
stopping a loud argument dead in its tracks. Any disruption that is
sudden, loud and startling will tend to stop the flow between people.
Try it. It works
