Because of the break in their pattern (hold out hand to shake..and
then doing something else, rather than meeting the hand to complete
the shake) it leaves a psychological gap waiting to be filled. He
could have held out his hand and then took the other person's hand by
the thumb....he could have held the wrist, middle finger or whatever.
The main point being the pattern was broken.

I won't suggest you try it on someone and notice the results you get.
And I also won't suggest you could invent variations on how you break
the patterns.

Of course, I won't suggest that one variation is linguistc - where
one holds out their hand and as the other person goes to shake
it....one might say - "Did you go to shake my hand by mistake or did
i suggest you ____________, now?"
