I think the idea behind that "concentrate on the image" trick was to
let the viewers' defences down by asking them to concentrate before
attempting to scare the brown stuff (and I ain't talking about HP
Sauce here, folks!) out of them with the cut-scene of Derren
screaming.
There's a webpage out there somewhere using the same principle. It's
really just a static picture of an apartment and after about 30
seconds the image changes momentarily to a picture of a scarey face
and a loud scream is played.
