I think it is unconcious but does have a purpose. I think he is
seeking confirmation or otherwise from the subjects expression.

> P.S. Does anyone here watching 'Crossing Over with John Edward'? I
hope someone on here does so I can discuss it. Is he for real?!

I have seen John Edward a few times. I was impressed until I started
reading about cold reading.

I saw an excellent expose about him on the web(although I have since
lost the link) - it basically detailed how he uses his researchers to
gather info about the audience before hand and edits the show so that
it looks more impressive.

Also he was timed asking 40 questions in a minute. That is how he
gets his info - he asks questions and the audience tell him things
and they are astounded by "his" accuracy. Why do you think he has to
ask "I have an older female here, who is that?". Why can't he just
say "Your mother Doris who died 10 years ago wants to tell you the
silver bracelet is hidden under the bathroom floor".

The biggest giveaway for me though was the disclaimer at the end of
the show. It is on the screen for about 0.5 seconds but the gist of
it is "this show is made for entertainment purposes only. The
producers rely heavily on 3rd party research for the content ...."
i.e. don't sue us.

If you want to see JE english style try Living TV's very own Colin Fry
(6ixth Sense). He has the charisma of a wet fish.
