I think this effect is more magic than photo reading. Just because he
claims it is photo reading doesn't mean that it is. If you look
through the archives here you will find quite a discussion about it.
Look at #1368 and especially the link in #1370.
Also if you want to find out more about actual photo reading do a
search on google. But beware photoreading sites usually just want you
to part with your cash.
