I'll second that, Desmond Morris is brilliant at subtle observation and many
of his books because they are quite old can now be found in your local
charity shop/secondhand bookshop.

Reading his "Manwatching" gave me an idea for a research project for college
which I think would double as some 'Derren style' mentalism in the right
context. It gave details of one particular signal that is used by humans to
communicate the fact that they like what they see and is subconciously
picked up by another person. This signal is used throughout china by
salesmen to determine whether or not a buyer/ potential customer is really
interested in the product.
So I get some photos of peoples faces and duplicate them so I've got 3 male
and 3 female and on 1 of each of the photos I alter it to incorporate this
signal in the facial features and ask people to judge which of the three
pictures appeals to them the most. Although the pictures appear identical to
the untrained eye one of them is a face exhibiting the signals that he/she
likes what they are looking and I found that when asked which photo was
preffered that people almost every time selected the face which had been
enhanced with the 'i like what i'm seeing' adjustment. This could of course
be presented as a piece of mentalism and done with a room full of people as
was suggested in the book. Incidentally there are a few plants in nature
that produce this particular signal within the face. One of which is a plant
of toxic nature commonly known as 'Belladonna' meaning 'beautiful woman' so
named I believe by the Romans. It is believed that they would use it too
enhance their attractiveness hence the name.

Enough of my senseless raving....

What is this signal I hear you cry, simply expansion of the pupil of the
eye.
