Actually, now I think about it, the Kray twins example was supposed
to be offering someone a cigarette, not a light. But it works about
the same either way!

Oh, and on a related note to your observation about Asda checkout
staff, I remember going into the Disney Store on Regent St. with my
brother many, many moons ago, and we had both been talking about how
the guy or girl on the door has the worst job in the world...i.e,
smile insincerely and spout some inane pre-scripted welcome, all
whilst wearing the horrific 'college style' uniform. So as the guy on
the door said his pre-scripted line, my brother said "Isn't it lovely
weather we're having today?" (which it was) and he was literally
stunned...it took him at least 30 seconds to formulate a response.

So next time you are going to some Americanised store which employs
these 'shithouse greeters', (of which Asda is one since it was taken
over by Wal-Mart, and now they have 'Golden Greeters') try out some
pattern interrupt fun with these unsuspecting automatons. I'd also
recommend fast food chains too, especially the big American ones, as
they too have scripts for the serving staff to follow, and they DO
follow them because they know that if they deviate from them in the
slightest and the customer happens to be a mystery shopper, then
they'll get a bad report. So they are obligated to go through the
whole tiresome routine of 'Would you like fries/a drink with that?'
or 'Do you want to Go Large/Max Your Meal/Whatever'....just make sure
you haven't got a large queue behind you when you experiment on these
folk!
