Welcome to the group Luke, God knows it can do with some fresh blood!!

The technique Derren uses at the dog track is called a 'pattern
interrupt', and it is an NLP technique discussed (briefly) by Richard
Bandler and John Grinder in 'Trance-Formations'...you seem to have a
basic understanding of how it works, and it is also the basis for the
technique Derren uses on the girl at the opera house in MC2.
Basically, you interrupt a set-in-stone unit of human behaviour such
as checking the ticket or shaking hands and then seize upon the split
second of confusion to get your suggestion in there. I have been
toying with this technique for a while in a few incarnations, with
mixed success. The key is to spot and identify the units of behaviour
and keeping your subject unaware.

One such unit of behaviour, like a handshake, is offering to light
someone's cigarette...they will immediately assume a jutted jaw
postion for you to light their cigarette, and you can interrupt it.
Oddly enough, I happened upon this unit of behaviour by reading about
its use by the Kray twins, who would offer a light, wait for the
proffered jaw and then punch the subject, usually breaking their jaw
and always taking them by complete surprise! Basically, look for any
behaviour that people do without even thinking about and you're
halfway there!

Best Wishes,

Daniel
