Subject: Some 'insights' regarding Derren's coin trick and cold reading

Just thought I'd throw these theories out for discussion...they're
not mine but a from an associate of mine who happens to be in the
police force and is quite a fan of Derren's.

1) He suggests that Derren uses a little artificial help with
the 'which hand is the coin in' routine, i.e. some sort of magnetic
device which will signal which hand it is in. I know a lot of so-
called 'street' magicians who use this apparatus, but I watched the
clip again and Derren has his sleeves rolled up. HOWEVER, he does
keep lifting the guy's arms up 'so the camera can see them' if you
will, so he could actually be feeling for tension in one arm, which I
think is the more likely explanation.

2) With regards to the cold reading which opens up MC3, he suggested
that Derren's accuracy is largely down to groundwork from the
production team, who, over a period of a week or so would be able to
spot who would be walking up and down Carnaby St. at a given time of
day, where they were coming from/going to, where they work etc.

This strikes me as fairly plausible, although I believe Derren was
using a lot of 'genuine' cold reading techniques as well.

Neither of these explanations occurred to me, but I thought I'd post
them to give a slightly different perspective and keep the postings
on track...no new Mind Control til November? What are we gonna do???
