CAPABILITY AND SKILL
When modelling, you
have to distinguish between a capability and a skill.
Modelling best elicits a discrete skill, rather than a
capability, which probably embraces many skills. You need to
treat each as a separate chunk. A chef, for example,
needs the skills of whisking, carving, presenting and
so on before he or she can profess cooking
capability. Similarly, the skill of building rapport with an
audience may not mean you have full capability in giving
public presentations. That comprises several skills. You
may recall this distinction in the neurological
levels you met in lesson 7. A skill lies at a lower
neurological level than a capability. And this gives us a clue
to successful modelling. To model a behaviour or
skill, you may need to model thought strategies at a
higher level, such as confidence and self-belief.
