I don't know if you've ever been to a magic show
and gone to the bar in the interval. There, one can
find plenty of people speculating about how things
were done. That's fun. It's all part of the
experience. Now, some amateur and professional magicians are
a foolish, pathetic attention-hungry bunch. Some of
them will just start doing card tricks for each other
as if screaming out: "Look at me!! I do magic too!!
Look! Look!" Others really can't stomach the idea that
some other magician is getting all the limelight. They
also can't stand there and listen to all the wild
theories being bandied about. They would rather speak in
loud voices about the methods that were actually being
used. It makes them feel big. It is truly pathetic.
This is why in a forum like this, it is only fun
discussing how Derren does his routines to a certain point.
Sure, sometimes people get things wrong. Other times,
they are right. No matter. When loudmouth magicians
come in and start saying "Listen to me, I am a
magician. Derren is doing this" or "Derren is doing
whatever..." then this an online version of the tragic cases
one finds littering the bar at magic shows. Regarding
book tests... I feel like my comment has only served
to make the term mystical and intriguing. Well, as
Glyncoy says, whatever Derren was doing on Mind Control 2
is pretty rare. I personally have never seen the
effect carried off so elegantly. If you look into the
oh-so-exciting world of booktests then you're probably not going
to be able to find anything like that for a LONG
time.
