Apparently so, to a degree.
When I said
'jarred' I meant the experience of stopping, thinking
"What? That's not right," and having to go back a line
or more. Sometimes, because of a type or a skipped
or repeated line, sometimes it's been because the
characters seem to be not so much talking as supplementing
the narrative. Stephen King refers to it in one of
his books about writing, it's the author intruding
into the story (but I guess the craft of writing
novels is another group).
It can be very distracting
when you're 'into' a book.
I remember reading
in the sleeve notes that the typeface in The Lost
World (Michael Crichton) was developed to be easier
(faster?) to read, so there are a great many factors at
work when you're sitting with a paperback in your
hand. Any hypnotists care to comment?
