Karen, I have met Derren 3 times at a convention
and listened to his lectures and seen various
demonstrations of his techniques, he has also published a book
which was only available to the magic and mentalism
communitys through specialist shops, this unfortunatly is no
longer in print, however there are numerous other books
that would interest any one in Mentalism/Mindcontrol
which contain "the secrets" used by mentalists. The
most favourite is "Corinda's 13 steps to mentalism"
regarded as the Bible among mentalists, this book is about
an inch thick and contains hundreds of
techniques.
"Mentalists" generally fall into one of two groups. They are
either magicians presenting their mind-reading in
exactly the same way that they'd present a regular magic
trick, or they take themselves far too seriously and, in
an effort to act like a real mind-reader, apply
forced patter and suspect acting.
But there are
those who succeed. Performers who find and understand
the balance between the believability of their
performance, and the power of their material. Who break down
the audience's sense of logic, of "what is" and "what
should be," and cause the audience to actually question
whether what they've just seen was indeed "the real
thing."
At the yearly conventions Derren is without the star
of the day, Derren is doing things that most of us
have held to be little more than pipe dreams. His
thinking on mentalism and magic in general is
ground-breaking.
Suffice to say at the convention it was yet another
truly
superb example of Derren's inimitable style of
breathtaking and richly creative mentalism, he also treated us
to a fascinating demonstration of Mind Control
featuring five consecutive 50-50 guesses with £20 staked on
the outcome - leaving the entire room of Mentalists
and Magicians baffled as usual. Some secrets are
never given away not even to other performers, we also
saw a few clips from the 3rd show before it was
aired, I have uploaded a photo of the TV team, in this
you will also see Andy Nyman also a excellent
Mentalist in his own right.
Remember what you see on
TV is usually edited and you only see the "Hits" and
very rarely the "misses" some of the "acts" are 100%
successful everytime whereas some others are more difficult
and have lots of misses.
David Blain the
magician who uses some basic mentalism tricks such as
think of a number between 1 and 50 or 50 and 100 etc (a
mentalism trick that works only 50% of the time,he also
does the think of a number that he correctly predicts
on a pad of paper another mentalism trick but
remember you only see the hits on the show) David caught
the worlds imagination with the self levitation, but
any competent magician could see from the video it
was two pieces of film edited together, there are
hundreds of rumours how it was done even amongst magicians
and even the magic suppliers in the trade, with
everyone guessing, but if you have the tape, the answer is
in the film itself, watch it carefully and you will
see. David uses a basic trick for levitation which I
myself have a habit of doing at party's etc he then made
the basic trick look more impressive with film
editing, a clue for you who have taped the show is watch
the middle part of the trick when he looks like he
has moved at least a foot of the ground, the actual
trick allows you to move about 1.5 inches off the
ground, the answer is there for everyone to
see.
Regards to you all
